| how to make my angry bunny happy? |
[Jan. 8th, 2010|01:01 pm] |
Greetings everyone! I came here to get suggestions for how to make my bunny happy. Her name is Belial, here is a picture of her sitting in my lap:

Once I pick her up and sit her in my lap, she will sit still and hang out for a few minutes. However, whenever I approach her she charges and growls. She is permitted free reign to hop around the kitchen, I feed her a lot of fresh veggies, talk to her, offer her cardboard and toys to chew on, and she has a mineral/salt lick. I have had her for about a year now, and I thought with time and good treatment she would become a happier bunny. But she is still very aggressive, and not very happy. Is there something I can do to make her less lonely? I'm afraid to get a second bunny to solve this problem, because she is so aggressive.
The only thing I have ever seen make her happy is my cat. She absolutely loves my cat, but sadly, the cat is absolutely terrified of her and will not go in the same room if she notices the bunny is present.
Any suggestions for how to make my bunny happier? |

( Toof and Hock Sore Issues )
Any way I can ease my baby boy's discomfort? =( I feel so overprotective of him because he's so tiny compared to my other (relatively healthy) buns and seems to have the most health problems. I just hate seeing him so down and hurting when he's normally so hyper and happy and cuddly (he'll sprint down the hall and binky if you slowly walk after him going "I'm gonna catch you" and is the only bun I have that will let me just casually walk up to him and pet him or stroke his flopped belly, and he's NEVER growled or grunted at me, -period-). |

| abscesses |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|05:53 pm] |
So I took my bunny in to the vet today because there was pus-like discharge coming from his eye, and then yesterday, the corner of his eye started looking really red and swollen.
The vet thinks Roger has an abscess. There was too much pus today to tell, but he thinks the alleged abscess is somewhere in the lower eye/sinus/back of mouth area. He said to me that if it is indeed an abscess, that prognosis is "not good." This vet is sort of rabbit savvy (not the best in the world, but probably one of the better in this area).
My bunny does have some other health issues. He's 6-8 years old, has chronic poopy butt, is missing several teeth, and has to have the remaining teeth trimmed (though he eats hay, because of the missing ones, they don't get worn down properly).
He said an abscess in that area would probably mean an MRI to find out where the abscess is exactly, and then surgery somewhere else, like a vet school where people specialize in exotics, but even then the prognosis is not good.
Does this sound right to you? Anyone have experience with abscesses, especially in that area?
EDIT: The vet gave Roger a shot of penicillin to hopefully get rid of some of the pus, and then I'm taking him back next week to see if it's easier to see any signs of where the pus is originating from. |

Dear Kiwi, mama can't keep playing this game. You can not keep stealing things from my hands and running away. Such as minty gum wrappers and humanz food. Sincerely, mama.
Here, you see my boyfriend taking a picture of kiwi and mama playing the tug away game. |

| Making a rabbit with snuffles comfortable: |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|03:52 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | hopeful | ] | So my mini-lop Lucy has the dreaded upper respitory infection. She's been to the vet and is on antibiotics and thankfully seems her normal self except that she's sneezing a lot. But the biggest problem is that the infection has spread to one of her tear ducts, which is full of pus and oozing. She has an ointment for it and if it hasn't cleared up by Tuesday the vet is going to flush it, but until then it just looks very red and painful. She keeps rubbing it, which is a sure sign that it's irritating her (and probably not helping the infection clear up, either). Anyone know of a good way relieve discomfort in a bunny with a sore eye? Would a warm compress help? Or ice wrapped in a towel or something? |

Had 840 cals yesterday, somewhere around there, which I think is pretty freaking good for a recovering bulimic. This morning I got smart and started using sweet n low in my coffee, 0 cals! hurray... I'm leaving home to do laundry at my sister's house, so I won't be home to eat anything. Hopefully her fridge is empty as always LOL Wish me luck girls...

| Anybody here have experience with Flemish Giants? |
[Jan. 7th, 2010|04:25 am] |
I've fallen in love with and am considering adopting a bonded male/female pair of 5 month old Flemish Giants up for adoption at one of my local rescues. I became totally infatuated with them due to their "gentle giant" nature, but I haven't had a bun in years, and what breeds I had were small lops and mini rexes. Totally different realm from a giant breed. Right now they're spending their days in a little cage without much exercise and attention. Nobody that's come to see them so far has wanted to go through with adopting them. I guess the potential for their large size at adulthood is rather intimidating to potential adoptees. I'm so tempted to just sign the papers and run off with them since I feel so horrible for them for having been stuck there for so long. But I want to be sure I know what I'm getting into before I dive in.
I've been doing research here and there on their breed for the past couple weeks, and I know how big they'll get, about how much food they'll consume and whatnot, but as for housing and what to really expect from them as a pet, I'm not sure. I haven't really talked to anyone that actually owns one, much less two. If I adopt them, they'll be house bunnies for sure. But I'll have to confine them at some point...like when I'm away from the house and at night for their safety and all.
Obvious a "normal" size rabbit cage or hutch isn't going to work. I was thinking an extra large wire dog crate with the pan bottom, and just letting them have supervised free run of the house during the day and outside time. Do you think that'd suffice? But should I house them together or separately?
Anything else that a new Flemish owner should be advised on and know about?
I'd really appreciate any info any of you might have. |

| | blank | ] | This community has just stopped in the last couple of months..
I have celery and carrots in my fridge, so lets see if I can stop the b/p and eat a little without losing control. I can't work out. Back problems hinder my sit-ups, and asthma hinders my running. Sucks. I'm ashamed of my weight, so lets just say it's really high. Hopefully one day I will be able to say how much I weigh without feeling too gross.

| Sweet Meadow smiles |
[Jan. 4th, 2010|12:27 pm] |
An addendum to the Sweet Meadow Farm post: here's the address of the Sherbon MA zoning board if anyone wants to write a good ol'-fashioned angry letter:
Town of Sherborn Zoning Board 19 Washington St. Sherborn, Ma 01770
I wonder if it might not be effective to print out and send the tons and tons of comments from the article website and from the Save Sweet Meadow Facebook page.
I'm the sort of person who agonizes over exactly the right words, so I haven't put my two cents in yet. Moe Moe, however, does not have this problem. When we were putting in our hay order last night he wrote this in the "comments/special instructions/gift sentiment" field of the online order form:
O HI SWEET MEDDO FARM
I LUB UR HAY! PETSTOR HAY IS DRY N BORIN I IGNOR IT URS IS SOFT N GUD-SMELLIN I EETS IT! LOTS OF IT
HERD ABOWT UR ZONIN BORD DUNNO WUTS A ZONIN BORD BUT I SAY IGNOR DEM KEEP GROWIN BEST HAY EVAR
UR FAN, MOE MOE (LOP BUN)
Got my e-invoice mailed to me this morning, confirming my order, shipping costs, etc. At the top, there was a brief response from Mr. Michaud, who owns the farm:
Moe Moe,
Thanks for your order and thanks for your note. LOL
Al
My heart is full of warm fuzzies, thinking of this person who does such good things for rabbits and other ani-pals, who is going through a hard time lately -- waking up early in the morning, reading this silly babbling email from a Crazy Rabbit Lady (me), and taking the time to write back. ♥SMF♥ |

| part monkey?! |
[Jan. 4th, 2010|12:40 pm] |
| [ | mood |
| | surprised | ] | so i'm just chilling on the couch with my laptop, feeling crappy, and i get a scare! Princess Pumkin almost jumped out of her cage, but the weird thing is she jumped up onto the bars! and hung there like a monkey climbing a chain-link fence until my gasp scared her and she jumped down. But i swear, she'd have climbed out of her cage if i hadn't startled her! i didn't know bunnies could do that! have any of your bunnies done that?
sufficient time has passed that i'm not rewarding the climbing, i think, so i'm gonna take the hint and let her out, but holy smokes! |

| Sweet Meadow Farm |
[Jan. 3rd, 2010|03:52 pm] |
It's time to order more hay, so Moe Moe and I thought we'd put in a plug for Sweet Meadow Farm, which (as many of you know) is seriously embattled. The idea of this farm getting shut down because the neighbors feels it's too noisy and dusty just absolutely enrages me, as does the neighbor's opinion that because pets eat this food instead of people, it isn't "real" agriculture. Many of us know how mediocre most petstore hay is, and how detrimental this is to the health of our longeared friends. When I was feeding pet store hay, Moe Moe would only nibble halfheartedly at it. Now that I feed Sweet Meadow hay, he dives in, strews it everywhere, and gobbles it up! The difference in quality is obvious. I'm constantly having to top up the hayrack. This farm keeps Moe Moe's little guts going, which, since our brush with stasis a while back, is of utmost importance to me. If you go to the Save Sweet Meadow Facebook page, you'll see a million other testimonials like this one.
Bunlovers, is there something we can do? |

| New Song: Dear New Unit + Better Mix of Cigarette |
[Jan. 2nd, 2010|10:11 pm] |
Another tune is finished:
Dear New Unit (160kbps 4.6MB)
Dear New Unit will be featured one way or another in Electronic Planet Ensemble's upcoming show at the Vortex theater: Surfin' UFO. If you're in Austin between Jan. 8 & 24, you should definitely check it out. David Jewell is a legendary mindwarper, even among Austin poets.
I also remixed Cigarette. I email mixes to musicians I know and they give me those special technical insights that only your peers can communicate to you, like... dude, that guitar is obnoxious. Turn it DOWN. Heh heh. Guitar players really should not be allowed to mix their own material. But this one is better, more focused on the vocals.
Update: I'm still not happy with Cigarette. I don't like the drum programming in the verses. I'm killing the link and sending it back to the shop for repairs.
